The Gold (Street Cafe) Standard

Writing about Sunshine's scones made me think of my all time favorite scone, a scone I would happily eat every day for the rest of my life (which would then be cut short by hyperglycemic shock): Gold Street Cafe's white chocolate raspberry scone. These babies blow everything else out of the water. Eaten warm, with a cup of coffee, has to be one of the sweetest brunch treats ever. Plus, when the white chocolate is all melty, there's no need for the traditional scone butter...so that makes this a healthy treat, right?

Gold Street serves all meals, but I would recommend breakfast. Not to say that they don't have good lunch and dinner foods- they do- but breakfast is just that good. Start with a caramel latte and order whatever is tempting you from the menu- chances are, it will be great. I regularly crave their cowboy breakfast which is a chile scone sandwich with ham, eggs, and mascarpone. Their eggs eleganza is also tasty, combining poached eggs, brioche and goat cheese. And I can't leave out their waffles. When peaches are in season, they often have a peach waffle special that's to die for. Oh, and did I mention their red chile and honey glazed bacon? That's the type of food odes are written for. I can't think of a thing off of the breakfast menu that has ever disappointed me...and that's saying something.

For the other meal times, Gold Street has a really good wine menu. Paired with one of their sandwiches or perhaps their shrimp nachos, you've got yourself a good meal. They also make tasty fish tacos, though I would avoid their odd quesadilla combos.

Over the last year, service at Gold Street has improved considerably. They are usually packed on weekend mornings- Saturdays with parents and kids fresh out of baby flamenco classes next door, and Sundays with the local brunch-ies. But Gold Street is most definitely worth the wait.
