Savoring Sophia's Place

Sophia's Place on 4th (between Solar and Osuna) fills the spot where my beloved Fajitaville used to dwell. It was a sad day indeed when all fajitas were lost...but a happy day when Denis- a former Fajitaville cook- bought the little restaurant and named it after his daughter. While fajitas are no longer on the menu, Sophia's is still able to feed that void in my heart- um, stomach.

Sophia's is open for breakfast and lunch (and occasionally dinner too). The restaurant itself is teensy, and if you have never been in before, you'll have to duke it out with the regulars for a spot. Order at the (tiny) counter and your food will be made right there in the open kitchen window. Watching Denis work with the grills on a busy Sunday is something of a magic show. In fact, I'm pretty sure that he is, actually, magical.

I recommend brunch, especially on the weekends when a more extensive menu is offered. The eggs benedict is truly wonderful, as are the pancakes which often feature seasonal fruit and pinon butter. The breakfast sandwich is a hearty option, though rather messy, so don't eat this if you're out on a date. ;) Most of the breakfasts (excluding the pancakes) come with a small bit of salad on the side. Do not be alarmed. Eat it. The dressing is delicious and complements all of the egg dishes amazingly well.

In terms of lunch, they have salads and sandwiches that are all very good. But I completely bypass those for the noodle bowls. As of late, they've removed this offering for the summer, but I am promised that it will return once the weather cools down. Now, it may sound counter-intuitive to order noodles from a place that otherwise serves very normal standards, but trust me, they are orgasmic. You can choose the bean thread or udon noodles and a meat (or extra veggies). The broth is spicy and veggie based, the veggies are grilled before being tossed in, and the overall product is nothing short of fabulous. It will warm you up, help you avoid the winter sniffles, and generally nourish your soul. Okay, I'm getting a little too sappy and poetic here, but you get my point. Noodle bowls are straight up awesome. And magical.

So elbow out a regular, and try Sophia's tasty and fresh foods. You might just find you do believe in magic...at least in the Sophia's kitchen. ;)

Dennis also enfolds shrimp (cooked so perfectly they pop when you bite them) into home made soft taco shells in his amazing shrimp tacos.

The only thing that would make this a PERFECT brekkie place is if they had an espresso machine. The coffee's fine, but I need my cappucino on Sunday morning.

Dennis has a new restaurant just across the street from Sophia's called "Ezra's Place" after his son. It's in the bowling alley where Sadie's got it's start. But E's Place is MUCH BETTER than Sadies. trust me.
